Discovery of Kartchner Caverns

The story of Kartchner Caverns begins with two amateur cavers, Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts, who stumbled upon the cave while exploring the Whetstone Mountains. Recognizing the significance of their discovery, they decided to keep it a secret to protect the fragile formations within. It wasn’t until 1988, when they shared their findings with the state of Arizona, that plans were made to preserve and develop the cave for public enjoyment.

Impressive Features

One of the most impressive features of Kartchner Caverns is its stunning array of stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations. The cave is home to some of the world’s longest soda straw stalactites, which can reach lengths of up to 21 feet. The “Throne Room” is another highlight, featuring a massive 58-foot tall column known as “Kubla Khan.” The intricate and delicate formations found throughout the cave are a testament to the slow and steady process of nature’s artistry.
